It is unfortunately inevitable that your car may get scratched, no matter how much care you take of it. There are factors that cannot be prevented and may not be caused at your own fault – for example scratches from bicycles, tree branches or shopping carts. These types of scratches are often deep ones too and will require more than just a simple touch up.
It’s important we take as much care and pay as much attention to detail to each and every car that pulls into our bodyshop. We understand how stressful it can be when you notice chips, dents and scratches in your car, especially when you’ve spent a fortune on it – after all, it’s one of your most prized possessions! We get the feeling, and that’s why we do what we do, we want to help keep your car looking brand new, and even better than before. No one wants to see scratches in their vehicle body, so here’s a few tips for repairing deep scratches at home.
Items you will need…
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Filler putty
- Squeegee
- Blue shop towels
- Foam block
- Paint leveler
- Touch up paint
- Small touch up brush
Now follow these simple steps…
1. To start, clean out the scratch with the rubbing alcohol. This will get rid of any left-over wax and create a clean, smoother finish for you to begin repairing the scratch. The repairing process also may not be as effective if there is still wax inside the scratch.
2. Then take the filler putty and squeeze a pea-sized amount just beside the scratch. Take a small squeegee and use it to glide the putty across over the scratch, then allow to dry for 2-3 minutes.
3. Then wrap a blue shop towel around your foam, wet sanding block. Apply liquid paint leveler to the towel, as this will remove the putty surrounding the scratch, but keep the excess putty within the scratch.
4. Gently rub the sponge across the putty, removing small sections at a time. Use a light amount of pressure, as you do not want to remove any of the putty inside the scratch. Please bear in mind that this may take a few minutes until the putty around the scratch will fade away.
5. Then take the touch up paint and a very thin brush to carefully paint over the putty by dabbing. Paint over the area with a thin light coat and allow to dry overnight! Add another thin layer if necessary.
